Off-grid calculator: how long without resupply?
Choose the vehicle, destination and your goal in days. The calculator shows what runs out first and plans step by step what it takes to reach your goal, with weight and cost.
The calculator needs JavaScript. In the studio you can run the same numbers with your own floor plan.
Opens without signing up, the van stays in your browser.
How the calculator works
Whatever runs out first sets the number: power, water, heating diesel, gas or food.
The plan tries every possible step: battery, solar, charging booster, gas instead of induction, insulation, tank, canister, rain from the roof or a watermaker, extra diesel tank, gas bottle, food supply. Each round it takes the step with the most gain per effort. A kilo counts like 25 Swiss francs, because payload is scarce.
The payload limit is respected. When the van is full, the calculator tells you how far it would get without a weight limit.
Water: two people at 15 litres a day (adjustable). Rain from the roof only without frost, a watermaker only by the sea.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a campervan stay off-grid?
With a typical build usually 3 to 7 days, limited by water or power. 20 days are possible but need more battery, solar, water and supplies, and that costs payload.
What runs out first when wild camping?
In summer usually water, in winter power (little sun, heater fan) or heating diesel. The calculator shows it for your destination.
How much water do you need per day in a campervan?
Frugally 8 to 10 litres per person, with showers 15 to 25 litres. The calculator assumes 15 litres, and you can change it.
